TITLE: “The Indian Commercial vehicle Industry”

DAY & DATE & TIME: Friday, 30th August 2024
03:00 PM

VENUE: Seminar Hall, Department of Management Studies, IISc.

Abstract:
The Indian Commercial Vehicle Industry is a barometer for the country’s economic development and reflected in the GDP. The market size is nearly $ 50 billion. The industry is and has been dominated by a duopoly of Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland who have over the decades weathered competition and still hold nearly 75% plus market share. We will see how the CV industry has transformed over the decades in terms of technology, regulation as well as global influence . And how new auto CV OEM’s have redefined the way of doing business ( calling out as “ the future of trucking “) resulting in the customers benefiting from this change. Interesting to see what makes companies like Daimler India Commercial vehicles and Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles stay in the race. Volvo buses and trucks—how they have transformed passenger travel and have created a unsurmountable niche in deep mining and their model for success and profitability.

The road infrastructure has improved by leaps and bounds and the entire ecosystem of OEM’s, suppliers had to reinvent themselves to improve reliability, durability, safety of trucks and buses as ergonomics for the driver and the passengers. Besides the focus on Uptime and how it has changed the equation of TCO-Total Cost of Ownership.

New age fuels-CNG, LNG are already on the roads as the government is focusing on reducing the dependence of petroleum imports and its impact on Forex outflow. EV’s and Hydrogen powered trucks are not very away -but given the frugal nature of the Indian consumer- we should be seeing this in the next 5-10 years.
I will speak about how I have witnessed the CV industry change in very many ways during my nearly three and a half decades and how some companies have adapted and thrived , some other have fallen by the way side and few others remain as stragglers- and why ?

The talk will also cover some trailblazing innovations that are being successfully deployed in US & Europe .
