Title: “Enhancing Financial Literacy-Challenges and Opportunities”

Abstract:
The world of finance is getting more complex by the day with an array of products such as mortgages, student loans, pension accounts, investment vehicles, credit cards, annuities and so on. One’s ability to process economic and financial information and make informed decisions about their financial future is known as financial literacy. Following the 2008 global recession, financial literacy has assumed importance across all geographics

In this project, the focus is on the financial literacy of gig workers. On August 16 and 17,focus group discussions were conducted with campus security guards to not only measure their current literacy levels, but also to understand the gaps and map their financial journey. During this talk, Dr. Uma will present the findings of the project, challenges and opportunities
for studying financial literacy and what lies ahead for the project.

Her association with IISc dates back to 2022, when she worked with Prof. Anjula Gurtoo on the British Council funded IP for Sustainability Project. Following this, she worked with Dr.Shashi Jain on the Gates Foundation funded SAATHI: Equitable access to finance for rural customers in India. With the Financial Literacy project for gig workers, Dr. Uma looks forward to learning about sustainable development and how financial literacy and awareness is fundamental to achieving SDG1 and SDG10
