Innovating Product Development Processes for Industrial Machinery: – Methods and Cases –
DAY & DATE & TIME:
Friday, 18th August 2023
4.00 PM (Tea/Coffee at 3.45 PM)
VENUE: Seminar Hall, Department of Management Studies, IISc.
Abstract:
Managing product development processes is a crucial aspect for commercially successful innovative products. If the product embraces core competence of a firm, the issue becomes even more critical. A development process takes varying steps depending on types of products. This talk session deals with a case of industrial machinery, in particular, paper converting machinery. The high-end products of this machinery segment are developed, designed and sold by only a limited number of companies in Switzerland, Germany and Japan in the global market. We see how such products, in case of Japan, have actually been developed to better understand the reality.
The topic includes a systematic way of product development processes and some useful methods that rationalize the processes, including such topics as Design Thinking, Attribute Mapping, Product Architecture, Variety Reduction Program, Platforming and Design Structure Matrix. Part of the talk refer to the method taught at MIT and the cases are actual cases practiced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan.
