Title: “Artifact evaluation in the age of digital and AI”

Brief Bio: Nicolas Prat is Associate Professor of information systems and information technology at ESSEC Business School, France. He holds a PhD in information systems and an accreditation to supervise research from Paris-Dauphine University, as well as a Master of Science in management from ESSEC Business School. His research focuses on design science research, business intelligence, and artificial intelligence. He has published numerous papers in major academic journals and conferences. He is a member of the editorial board of Systèmes d’Information et Management (the premier French-language academic journal in information systems) and the Journal of Database Management. Prior to IISc, he has been a visiting scholar at MIT Sloan School and Management and Notre-Dame University (USA) and the University of Alicante (Spain).

ABSTRACT: Design Science Research (DSR) is a well-established research method in information systems (IS). It builds and evaluates artifacts, such as artificial intelligence (AI) systems, algorithms, chatbots, apps, or platforms. The evaluation of artifacts thus represents a major issue. We present a taxonomy of evaluation methods for IS artifacts, based on an analysis of artifact evaluation practice, as reflected by ten years of DSR publications in premier IS journals. This taxonomy comprises six dimensions: criterion, evaluation technique, form of evaluation, secondary participant, level of evaluation, and relativeness of evaluation. Based on the taxonomy, we identify seven typical evaluation patterns. We then argue for an enrichment of the repertoire of evaluation methods in the age of digital and AI. As an illustration, we present a framework that leverages agentic AI for artifact evaluation.
