ABSTRACT: Design science research builds and evaluates artifacts. In the discipline of information systems, it is a well-established research method, along with behavioral research. The artifacts that design science research builds and evaluates are constructs, models, methods, or instantiations. For example, algorithms are methods, and apps are instantiations. There are several commonalities between design science research and policy, including in their process and their prescriptive / normative orientation. We explore these commonalities and the resulting possible synergies. We argue that policies are specific types of artifacts and may thus be defined, implemented and evaluated as design artifacts.
