TITLE: “Evolution and deployment challenges of large deep learning models”
DAY & DATE & TIME: Wednesday, 3rd July 2024
11:00 AM (Tea/Coffee at 10:45 AM)

VENUE: Seminar Hall, Department of Management Studies, IISc.

Abstract:
My talk will introduce some natural language processing (NLP) problems involving customer reviews, product search and other text data. I will then briefly discuss how the language modeling landscape has evolved to the recent emergence of large language models (LLMs). LLMs, despite their popularity, have not yet been as widely adopted for real-world use-cases. I will delve into some challenges in leveraging LLMs in production environments for large systems. This will cover technical ones like shortcomings in evaluation frameworks, issues with model calibration impacting decision-making, fairness, etc in various applications, and language disparity. I will also cover regulatory challenges and related technical problems that go beyond LLMs to general artificial intelligence applications.

Brief Profile:
Anil Nelakanti is an applied scientist with Amazon working on search and information retrieval for their emerging and new marketplaces. He has worked on machine translation and text-to-speech systems for the digital entertainment industry, sponsored advertising, and reviewing mining for e-commerce. His doctoral thesis explored applying structured penalties for language modeling at INRIA Paris.
